ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - Authorities are dropping a kidnapping charge against a man in Orangeburg County because police in Charleston say he was beating his wife in a hospital room at about the same time.

Deputies this week charged 26-year-old Rondell Washington in connection with the kidnapping of a 4-month-old girl from a Holly Hill home on Jan. 14.

But Washington’s lawyer pointed out he was arrested at almost the same time at a Charleston hospital. Police say he hit the mother of his child and threw her on the bed..

The sheriff says seven men broke into the Holly Hill home and kidnapped the child, leaving her unharmed on the side of a Berkeley County road. No one is currently been charged in the case.
