DETROIT (AP) - Detroit police say a woman’s bravery and “unwavering desire to survive” helped her fend off a rapist and torturer by stabbing him in the eye and “ending his reign of terror.”

Police say they believe 23-year-old ex-con Roderick Neely committed two similar attacks last year.

The judge who arraigned him Saturday ordered Neely held without bond on charges of torture, kidnapping, attempted rape and possessing a firearm as a felon.

Prosecutor’s spokeswoman Maria Miller says he didn’t have a lawyer Sunday.

The 43-year-old woman says the gun-wielding man forced her into a car as she walked near a gas station Wednesday. She says he beat her, pulled off her clothes and put a blowtorch to her feet.

She says he fled after she jabbed a screwdriver in his eye.
