FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) - The last soldiers with the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division have returned home from their final mission with the unit.

Media reported the soldiers returned on Sunday to Fort Campbell after a nine-month deployment to Afghanistan.

It was the last mission for the brigade, which will be inactivated later this year. The 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division is among 10 Army brigade combat teams that will shut down by the end of 2015.

The Fort Campbell team became famous as the “Band of Brothers” in a book by historian Stephen Ambrose and a subsequent HBO miniseries produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.

Lt. Col. Scott Kirkpatrick coming home was humbling and bittersweet.

“This is the final flight of the band of brothers and their final rendezvous with destiny as they furl the colors,” he said. “It was a great honor to be the commander of the 2nd of the 506th and we were able to bring everybody home from my battalion which is usually a very, very difficult thing to do. This mission was difficult, but we are very happy to be back and we’re very happy that we’ve accomplished all the tasks that were given to us.”
