WASHINGTON (AP) - A 21-year-old woman has been charged with killing her newborn son in the bathtub of the northeast Washington apartment where she lived with her family.
The Washington Post reports (https://wapo.st/1bsbiQU ) that Lillian Alvarado told her father that the boy was born dead on Thanksgiving, but the medical examiner has ruled that he was born alive and then asphyxiated and dismembered.
Alvarado was arrested last week and charged with first-degree murder and cruelty to children. She was ordered detained and must undergo a mental health evaluation.
Santiago Alvarado says his daughter fled violence in El Salvador, where he husband was killed, and came to the United States about a year ago. He says her 2-year-old daughter was taken by social workers the same day the baby was born.
