YERINGTON, Nev. (AP) - Former Mason Valley News publisher Dave Sanford has died. He was 58.

His brother, Jim Sanford, tells the Reno Gazette-Journal that (https://tinyurl.com/qcxmvmr ) Sanford had been diagnosed with incurable melanoma but the cause of his death is unknown.

Sanford fell while on his way to church Sunday at Yerington Vineyard Fellowship. His brother said he was taken to the South Lyon Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The Sanfords’ parents, Robert and Martha, founded the Mason Valley News in the 1950s. It became known for its masthead: “The Only Newspaper in the World that Gives a Damn About Yerington.”

It was passed on to their two sons in 1998 and sold to Gannett Co. in 2000, when Dave Sanford was named publisher. He retired last summer.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
