New sedative guidelines begin for Hawaii dentists

HONOLULU (AP) - New guidelines dictating the use of sedatives are beginning for dentists in Hawaii.

KITV (https://is.gd/ZlDt46) says the new rules effective Monday come in the aftermath of the Jan. 3 death of 3-year-old Finley Boyle, who reportedly went into cardiac arrest after oral sedation in the office of a Kailua dentist.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed the regulations last week.

Under the new rules, dentists must have advanced training in sedation and general anesthesia.

Dentists also must have monitoring and emergency equipment and staff
