AVALON, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say three people were injured, two critically, when their 22-foot power boat crashed at Arrow Point on Santa Catalina Island.

Lifeguard Capt. Rob Pelkey says an emergency call came about 7:15 p.m. Monday, reporting the vessel had run aground.

The injured were taken to mainland hospitals by Coast Guard and Los Angeles County Fire Department helicopters.

Fire officials say two of the victims were listed in critical condition. The third appeared to have minor injuries.

Pelkey says the boat slammed head-on into the sheer cliffs that are common on the island’s north side near Isthmus Cove.

It was not immediately clear what led to the crash. It was dark but skies were clear.

Pelkey says the boat is a 22-foot Glacier Bay catamaran with twin outboard motors.
