ENCINAL, Texas (AP) - Three men have been killed and another critically hurt when their vehicle hit an 18-wheeler stopped along a South Texas highway.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the accident happened Monday morning on State Highway 44 near Encinal (en-suh-NAHL’), about 35 miles north of Laredo. Investigators are trying to determine why the pickup truck hit the rig that was parked for repairs.

Three passengers in the pickup truck died at the scene, while the driver was transported to a San Antonio hospital. Officials with University Health System on Tuesday said 24-year-old David Trevino Jr. of Alice remained in critical condition.

The accident killed 39-year-old Ricardo Rene Tanguma of San Diego, 32-year-old Adrian Trevino of Alice and 24-year-old Andres Hinojosa Jr. of San Diego.

The 18-wheeler driver wasn’t hurt.
