The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch in the western Florida Panhandle, and officials aren’t taking any chances.

Schools, courts and government offices in the region have closed because of anticipated snow and ice as a massive winter storm system sweeps the country.

There is currently a winter storm warning in Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties until 6 a.m. Wednesday, the Birmingham News reported.

Officials in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties have declared a state of emergency from midnight Tuesday to midnight Wednesday.
