EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a man whose body was found at a suburban Syracuse business apparently died of exposure to the elements after his car got stuck in a ditch.

The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office says 21-year-old Mark Palumbo of Cicero was out with friends when his vehicle crashed into a ditch in East Syracuse around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Deputies say Palumbo decided to seek assistance in the 6-degree weather while the friends stayed with his vehicle. A police officer arrived soon afterward and Palumbo’s friends contacted him on his cellphone. But deputies say Palumbo refused to return to the scene and wouldn’t divulge his location.

Palumbo’s mother later told police he never returned home. His body was found early Monday morning in the rear of a metal fabrication business. Police say it appears he died from the cold temperatures.
