SANDY, Utah (AP) - Homicide detectives in Sandy are investigating after a 63-year-old retired police officer was found shot dead in his home.

Authorities say they went to check on Kevin Meik a little before 2 p.m. Wednesday after he failed to show up for an appointment with a friend.

He was found dead with a gunshot wound in his home on Waters Circle, where police say he lived alone. Police say Meik had medical problems, but they ruled a few hours after the discovery that the case was not a suicide.

Sandy police Sgt. Jon Arnold says Meik was a former Salt Lake City officer, but had been retired for years. Arnold says detectives don’t believe the killing was related to his police job.
