MURRIETA, Calif. (AP) - A former Riverside County sheriff’s deputy who killed a man during an off-duty bar argument has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison.
Forty-four-year-old Dayle Long was sentenced Thursday for the second-degree murder of Samuel Vanettes.
Authorities say Long had been drinking when he shot the 36-year-old Vanettes in December 2011 at Spelly’s Pub & Grille in Murrieta.
Long said he fired in self-defense after a friend of the victim threatened him.
At the time, Long was a 10-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department. He was fired in 2012.
