GUYTON, Ga. (AP) - Effingham County sheriff’s officials say a man and woman accused of leaving their toddler home alone while subfreezing wind blew through an open door have been arrested.

Sheriff’s spokesman David Ehsanipoor says deputies were responding to calls about a reckless driver when they found a car 20-year-old Scott Dufford and 31-year-old Melissa Rossetti were riding in doing doughnuts in a church parking lot early Wednesday morning.

Authorities say Dufford was driving under the influence and investigators found the couple’s 18-month-old child alone while the home’s front door was left open.

Ehsanipoor says the child is in the custody of a relative. Dufford and Rossetti have been charged with loitering, prowling and child cruelty. They’re being held in the Effingham County jail and it’s unclear if they have attorneys.
