SMYRNA, Ga. (AP) - Cobb County fire officials say part of a teenage girl’s leg was severed when she was hit by a car.

Department spokesman Denell Boyd told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the 14-year-old girl may have been trying to help push her family’s disabled vehicle on an icy road when she was hit by a car that was unable to top Thursday afternoon.

Authorities say the girl’s leg appeared to have been severed below the knee.

The teen was rushed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston and was in surgery Thursday evening.

The girl’s identity hasn’t been released, and it’s unclear if charges will be filed.
