LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has nominated Marcie Edwards to head the Department of Water and Power, which is reeling from billing problems and questions about missing millions.

Edwards is currently city manager of Anaheim but she worked at the DWP for 24 years, beginning as a 19-year-old clerk typist.

Edwards said Thursday that her mission as general manager will be to run the DWP like a business and “leave politics at the door.”

Her appointment needs approval from the DWP Commission and the City Council.

Edwards would replace Ron Nichols, who’s stepping down after three years amid controversy over a flawed $162 million computerized billing system. The utility’s also being audited over $40 million unaccounted for by two affiliated nonprofit institutes.
