CHICAGO (AP) - A 57-year-old suburban Chicago man found guilty in May of the 2006 murder of his 77-year-old mother was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
Wayne Weinke Jr. of Park Ridge was accused of throwing Gloria Weinke over a railing at her Arlington Heights retirement home following a quarrel about his inheritance.
Prosecutors say the woman lay at the bottom of a stairwell for 14 hours before being found. She died of her injuries nearly three months later.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports (https://bit.ly/1gv1u09) dozens of Weinke’s supporters described him as a beloved member of the community.
However during Thursday’s sentencing, Cook County Circuit Judge William Lacy said Weinke has admirable qualities, “but they are not a defense to murder.”
Prosecutors say the mother and son had disagreed about a multimillion-dollar estate.
