RAMAH, N.M. (AP) - Officials in McKinley County are investigating reports that a teacher shot a student’s dog

Sheriff’s Lt. Rob James Maiorano says officers were called to a church parking lot Saturday, where a 16-year-old and his 10-year-old sister were playing with their dog, Copper. They told authorities the dog ran through a hole in the fence into a nearby lot and was shot.

KOB-TV reports the 16-year-old, Wesley Scutt, identified the shooter as a teacher.

Maiorono says the dog had to be put down.

He says officers have been unable to make contact with the man, but that there isn’t any indication the dog threatened him.

He says no charges have been filed, and the case remains under investigation.
