PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix man is in custody in connection with the death of his girlfriend’s infant daughter.

Larry Works III had his initial court appearance Wednesday after being arrested on suspicion of one count of first-degree murder and one count of child abuse.

He doesn’t have a lawyer yet.

The 20-year-old Works and his girlfriend transported the 18-month-old girl to Phoenix Baptist Hospital on Jan. 20.

Medical staff pronounced her dead during treatment and notified Phoenix police.

Detectives say they examined the baby’s body and observed what appeared to be two burn marks on her left leg, a bite mark on her abdomen, and bruising to her chest and abdomen.

An autopsy conducted by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the infant’s injuries were caused by blunt force.
