JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - A prosecutor has found that the shooting of a suspect by a Jonesboro police officer earlier this month was justified.

Prosecutor Scott Ellington said Thursday that police Cpl. John Eidson was defending himself and bystanders when he fatally shot 35-year-old Michael Anthony Ware of Keiser.

Police were investigating a stolen vehicle report on Jan. 9 and were looking for a suspect at a trailer park. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Eidson approached the trailer where the shooting occurred and Ware opened the door and shot at Eidson.

Eidson returned fire, fatally striking Ware.

Witnesses told investigators that Ware said the night before he was wanted for multiple offenses and that he pledged to fight officers to the death.
