RENO, Nev. (AP) - A swarm of earthquakes has been shaking things up in and around Virginia City.

Seismologists at the University of Nevada, Reno said Thursday that more than 100 temblors have occurred since Jan. 21. No damage has been reported.

Most have been small, but four registered larger than a magnitude 3 and could be felt in Virginia City and Reno.

Scientists say the activity increased from Wednesday night into Thursday, when two quakes of magnitude 3.2 and one registering 3.1 were recorded.

Depths range from about 5 to 8 miles below the surface.

Scientists are monitoring the swarm and say there’s no way to tell if it is a prelude to a larger event.

Nevada ties for third in the nation for seismic activity behind Alaska and California.
