BELLEVUE, Wash. (AP) - An inmate in a red jumpsuit and shackles has escaped from custody while being transferred from a jail to Bellevue District Court for a hearing.

Bellevue police say the 21-year-old man was last seen running from the courthouse Friday and may have jumped into a blue Crown Victoria seen in the area. Police say they’re also looking for the man’s girlfriend.

Police identified the inmate as Windell Downs. He had been jailed with bail set at $350,000 on robbery and theft charges.

Police spokeswoman Carla Iafrate says two inmates were being transported to court by one support officer. She says when Downs ran, the officer had to stay with the remaining prisoner until help arrived.
