VACAVILLE, Calif. (AP) - Police in Northern California say officers shot and wounded a passenger in a car after the driver - a suspected drunken driver - veered toward them.

The shooting in Vacaville occurred around 11:50 p.m. Thursday. Vacaville Police Lt. John Carli says an officer and a sergeant from the department were conducting a traffic stop when a car that had left a nearby restaurant went through a field with its lights off and came toward them.

The officers opened fire, striking one of two passengers in the vehicle in the leg. The car hit a PG&E; utility box, which fell down on the car that police had originally stopped.

Carli said the driver, 25-year-old Antonio Vasquez, of Vacaville, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

The officers who opened fire have not been identified.
