PHOENIX (AP) - An assistant to Phoenix Fire Chief Bob Khan will serve in his place when he retires next month.

City officials announced Thursday that Executive Assistant Chief Kara Kalkbrenner will be acting fire chief until the position is filled permanently.

Kalkbrenner has been with the Phoenix Fire Department since 1985.

Khan announced Wednesday that he would be leaving his position to spend more time with his 82-year-old father, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

The 54-year-old Khan is a 31-year veteran of the department.

He became chief in July 2006 and led efforts to enhance response times, adding fire stations and firefighters in growing areas.

He also is credited with reorganizing the fire department and introducing new technology to better dispatch personnel and equipment.
