ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - Police in Rockford say the northern Illinois city has its first homicide of the year.
Detectives are investigating the death of 29-year-old Nicholas Vitali. The Rockford Register Star reports (https://bit.ly/MmzsWT) Vitali suffered multiple cuts and stab wounds. A motorist found his body early Thursday on the street outside a church.
Rockford Police Chief David Hopkins says investigators are trying to find out why someone would want to kill Vitali.
Rockford had 22 homicides last year. That was an 83 percent increase over 2012, when there were 12 homicides.
