DENVER (AP) - Mayor Michael B. Hancock says Denver needs to do a better job of providing affordable housing as home prices rise.

In his annual State of the City address Monday, Hancock said about 38 percent of the city’s renters are having trouble keeping up with the rising cost of living in Denver. He said the city will soon announce a housing plan for the next five years.

In the speech at the Denver Art Museum, Hancock also said he is committed to making sure that recreational marijuana industry is making a safe contribution to the city’s economy. He vowed to continue to work to keep pot away from children. He also said the city is pursuing new enforcement measures related to the production of hash oil.
