A group of Houston-area shoppers took matters into their own hands Monday afternoon when they noticed two children screaming for help inside a parked car in 90-degree weather.

“It was a crazy situation,” said Gabriel Del Valle, who used his cellphone to video record the incident, a Houston CBS affiliate reported.

Video shows a man using a hammer to bust open the back window of the Jeep. After several minutes, a woman climbs into the back seat and the small boy and girl are freed.

Mr. Del Valle said he stepped out of his shop at a strip mall in Katy, after hearing the children crying out for help.

“The kids were in there crying,” he told the station. “I mean you would understand. It’s real hot.”

The children’s mother apparently said she had left them unattended so that she could get a haircut. Mr. Del Valle said the mother pleaded with witnesses not to call the police, and no one has so far, the station reported.
