MORENO VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department says one of its police officers was shot in a confrontation with several armed suspects but is expected to survive.

Department spokesman Albert Martinez says the deputy was one of many responding to an assault with a deadly weapon call in Moreno Valley on Tuesday afternoon when he was shot.

He’s being treated at a hospital for injuries that are considered minor.

One other person has been injured in the incident, but it wasn’t clear who they were or what the circumstances were.

Police and deputies including a SWAT team were trying to take the suspects into custody and extracted another person from the scene near State Route 60.
