WASHINGTON (AP) - South Dakota has been granted more than $294,000 in federal funds to digitize 100,000 pages of historic state newspapers published between 1836 and 1922.

U.S. Senator Tim Johnson on Monday announced the grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Johnson says the funds will help preserve and promote South Dakota’s rich history.

The grant will be administered by State Archivist Chelle Somsen.

South Dakota’s Digital Newspaper Project is part of a larger, national newspaper archiving program.
