DETROIT (AP) - Happy Birthday, Avern Cohn.

The Detroit federal judge is turning 90 Wednesday, and his docket shows no sign of getting shorter. He maintains a regular load of criminal and civil cases on the second floor at the downtown courthouse.

Cohn was recently assigned to take over a long-running case involving the use of excessive force and other changes at the Detroit Police Department. In 2010, he sentenced Detroit council member Monica Conyers to three years in prison for corruption.

Cohn was in private law practice in 1979 when President Jimmy Carter nominated him to the federal bench.
