GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Greenville’s new police chief is the former top cop of Greensboro, North Carolina.

Greenville hired Ken Miller on Wednesday. He will start as police chief in the South Carolina city on Sept. 12.

Miller beat out five other finalists for the job, including Greenville’s interim police chief Mike Gambrell, who decided to retire after he was passed over.

Miller says he left his job in North Carolina because the state’s pension system didn’t make it worth it for him to keep working.

The 50-year-old veteran police officer spent four years as chief in Greensboro, and before that worked for two decades with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. Miller also is an Air Force veteran.

Miller replaces Terri Wilfong, who retired in April.
