Rep. Kerry Bentivolio, Michigan Republican, is returning an award given to him in March by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce after the chamber threw its support behind his primary opponent, Dave Trott.

Mr. Bentivolio’s office now calls the organization the “largest pro-amnesty group” in the U.S. for its support of comprehensive immigration reform, the Detroit Free Press reports.

In a blog post this week, the U.S. Chamber’s Sean Hackbarth hit back, writing that the organization doesn’t support amnesty and never has and that it supports “a means for undocumented workers to earn lawful status by getting a background check and paying any fines and back taxes owed.”

The piece links to a poll showing Mr. Trott with a 22-point lead over Mr. Bentivolio ahead of their Aug. 5 primary.
