ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York authorities say a Bronx-based tax preparer has been sentenced to prison for filing fake tax returns.

Joseph Barrios Jr., of Mahwah, New Jersey, operated JB Tax Inc. in the Bronx.

Tax officials say Justice Martin Marcus has sentenced the 50-year-old Barrios to 15 months to four years in prison on two felony charges.

The Department of Taxation and Finance says Barrios was charged in January with filing false returns for clients, pleaded guilty, had his state registration revoked and while awaiting sentencing to an expected six-month jail term was charged with new counts.

Under a plea agreement he faces $20,000 in fines and penalties.

The department says it audited more than 5,000 returns filed by Barrios since 2009, stopping or recovering more than $6 million in fraudulent refunds.
