Rep. Henry Cueller questioned Wednesday whether President Obama’s meeting with local officials during his trip to Texas will have any impact on the surge of illegal immigrant children trying to cross into the United States.

Mr. Cueller, Texas Democrat, said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that Mr. Obama should make the trip to the border because a humanitarian crisis has unfolded there.

“I certainly feel if it is a crisis, somebody has to address this issue. In this case, I think the president should do this,” he said, before suggesting that Mr. Obama’s meeting with Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican, and local leaders could be bogus.

“When he talks about meeting with local leaders, last night I got some calls, saying, ‘Who are those local leaders? They are certainly not the local leaders from the border,’ ” Mr. Cueller said.
