BOSTON (AP) - The highest court in Massachusetts has upheld the murder conviction of a Brockton man who killed another man with whom he’d been romantically involved by repeatedly striking him on the head with a hammer and slashing his neck.

Laurence Bynum Harris was convicted of first-degree murder in 2011 of the 2007 slaying of 21-year-old Claudio Montrond.

Bynum Harris hit Montrond with a hammer and stabbed him with a sculpting tool in a bus terminal parking garage.

Bynum Harris appealed his life sentence on several grounds, including that evidence of his mental health was not handled properly and denial of a motion to suppress some evidence.

The Supreme Judicial Court on Wednesday rejected those arguments.

In praising the decision, Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz called it a “vicious and unprovoked attack.”
