LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Dona Ana County authorities say a woman is accused of child abuse in a case involving her friend’s young daughter.

County Sheriff’s investigators say the child’s mother had left her in the care of her girlfriend, Yvette Pinon-Carbajal, while she went to work.

When she came home, Pinon-Carbajal told the mother her 3-year-old daughter had slipped in the bathtub and had been sleeping most of the day.

The two women brought her to the hospital. Police say the girl now is in a medically-induced coma and in critical condition.

Authorities say Pinon-Carbajal was arrested early Wednesday and is being held on $100,000 cash-only bond. It’s unclear if she has an attorney yet.
