SOUTH FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Police on Long Island say a 73-year-old man shot his 74-year-old wife to death and then killed himself with the same gun.

Police found the bodies of Barry and Anne Kaplan in their bedroom in South Farmingdale on Tuesday.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/SVZ3ZP ) that the couple’s son declined to comment on their deaths Wednesday and attempts to reach their daughter were not successful.

Police say the couple’s family had asked a neighbor to check on the two. It was that neighbor who called authorities.

Newsday reports that the Kaplans competed for many years in Long Island’s tomato competitions.

Last year at the newspaper’s Great Long Island Tomato Challenge, they each entered 2-pound-plus beefsteak tomatoes.

Fellow competitor Tina Kraemer of Bohemia said the Kaplans were “just very welcoming people.”
