LANSING, Mich. (AP) - It’s getting cheaper to be a Michigan lawyer.

Active attorneys pay $305 a year to the State Bar of Michigan. But a portion of dues earmarked for the attorney discipline system will be cut by $20.

The Michigan Supreme Court ordered the cut Friday because of a surplus in the attorney discipline fund. The court didn’t disclose the exact size of the surplus but it’s more than $5 million.

All lawyers pay a fee for the discipline system, even if they’re not active members of the State Bar.
