LAS VEGAS (AP) - Las Vegas police say the officer who fatally shot a knife-wielding woman who was stabbing another woman at an apartment south of the Strip is a nine-year veteran of the metro police force.

The department identified the officer Friday as 32-year-old Sergio Phillips. He has been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

Phillips joined the force in 2005 and is a member of the Homeland Security Saturation Team assigned to Patrol Operations Support.

He and another officer responded to a call about a suspect with a knife about 12:20 a.m. Wednesday at Manor Suites 3 miles south of the Strip. When they arrived, they saw her breaking into a room and stabbing the other woman.

Three young children in the apartment were unhurt.
