One person was shot to death and four others were injured Sunday at a pre-party ahead of the Black Entertainment Television Awards show in Los Angeles, police said.

The gunman fired several rounds at the party at the Monalizza Restaurant & Banquet Hall, about 3 miles west of downtown, before fleeing, the Los Angeles Police Department said, Reuters reported.

It was not immediately clear whether the shooter attended the party or fired from outside, Los Angeles police officer Drake Madison said.

It was unclear whether the shooting was gang related.

In a separate incident Saturday night, police said a man was stabbed in the stomach at a pre-show event at the Lure nightclub in Hollywood.

Suspects are being sought in both incidents.

Officer Madison said the parties were related to the BET Awards but not part of the official events, the Associated Press reported.

The BET Awards will air live at 8 p.m. ET.
