Conservative commentator and Drudge Report creator Matt Drudge described himself Friday as a “heat seeking missile” in an increasingly chaotic news industry.

“I will go where the action is, sometimes before it’s cool to do it, that’s why I get in trouble,” he said in a rare interview with D.C. radio station WTOP. “I make waves, I don’t surf them as I used to say. That is not that easy in this atmosphere with so many media outlets.”

The creator of the right-leaning aggregation website DrudgeReport.com described the news business as “a little psychotic,” because “everybody’s doing everything.”

“You think of what’s just happened this year, the news has been so dynamic internationally and domestic. This is a vibrant era of media and it’s not going away anytime soon,” Mr. Drudge said.

The 47-year-old Maryland native, who normally avoids interviews, told WTOP that he came to the station because it represents the D.C. community where he grew up.

“The D.C. I’m seeing now is so vibrant. This is the center, this is the heartbeat of the nation, for good or bad,” he said. “D.C., I’ve never seen it this vibrant, and this station is on the front lines of the nation’s capital and it’s serious work, you know news has never been more important.”
