DORSET, Vt. (AP) - The Dorset Town Forest is getting a $263,500 grant from the U.S. Forest Service to help buy a 201-acre parcel of land near Owls Head mountain in Vermont’s Taconic Mountains.
The Dorset Town Forest is home to a trail network that has been in existence for over a century.
The Vermont grant is part of a series of $2.3 million in Forest Service grants to help communities in eight states secure community forests. The Community Forest Program is designed to protect forests that are important for people.
The program provides financial assistance grants to local governments working to establish community forests with a focus on economic and environmental benefits, education, forest stewardship and recreation opportunities.
