NORMAL, Ill. (AP) - Cierra Thompson ignored her nerves and calmly sank both free throws with less than 5 seconds left to lead Teutopolis past Elmhurst IC Catholic 32-28, capturing third place in the Class 2A state tournament Saturday.

The Lady Shoes’ 32 points tied the lowest winning point total in Class 2A tournament history. Hamilton defeated Nashville 32-26 in 2009.

Abby Radoha scored a game-high 14 points for Elmhurst.

Elmhurst led 16-12 at the half. Thompson sealed the victory by sinking two free throws with less than 5 seconds left in the game.

“I not going to lie,” Thompson said, “I was a little nervous at the line.”

Teutopolis coach Laurie Thompson said the low score didn’t surprise her.

“We hold teams to 31 points on average this year, so that’s about right. But we usually score more than 32 points. I think we have averaged 42 points a game.”

In Friday’s semifinals, Teutopolis lost to Champaign St. Thomas More 63-43, while Elmhurst lost to Prophetstown 57-48. Champaign squares off against Prophetstown in the nightcap for the Class 2A championship.
