LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The mayor of the southern Arkansas city of Monticello has died.

The Drew County Coroner’s office says 70-year-old Allen Maxwell died about 7 a.m. Monday. Drew County Coroner Charles Dearman says a preliminary report indicates Maxwell died from a heart attack.

Maxwell was serving his first term as mayor and is a former state representative.

City Clerk Andrea Chambers is serving as acting mayor and says an interim officeholder will be appointed in the next week in a city council meeting.

A special election will be held in June to fill the office until Dec. 31.
