ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A 36-year-old Anchorage man has been sentenced to 75 years in prison for the shooting death of his girlfriend.

James Marquez was sentenced in Anchorage Monday.

Marquez was convicted of murder last July for the 2012 killing of Carla Webb, who had been shot in the left eye.

KTUU (https://is.gd/dtv21j) says both Marquez and Webb’s sister, Evelyn Brazzell, said in court that Marquez bore responsibility for the crime.

During his trial, Marquez had argued that he should be convicted of a lesser charge of manslaughter. He claimed he was upset with Webb because she had an abortion. Webb’s family said she wasn’t pregnant.

Marquez had faced up to 99 years in prison for the killing.
