BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) - Sheriff’s officials say a Central California boy is ok after a gun he and other students discovered at a school bus stop discharged.

The 8-year-old boy and three other students were waiting for a bus in Bakersfield on Tuesday morning when they found a handgun discarded nearby.

Kern County Sheriff’s officials say the boy was holding the gun near his face, pointed away from his body when it went off.

The handle struck him in the forehead, leaving him with a minor laceration. He did not need medical treatment.

Sheriff’s officials say the bus pulled up just as the gun discharged, but no one else was injured.

Investigators are trying to determine how the gun got there.
