BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - An ex-Childersburg city councilwoman has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison in an embezzlement scheme.

Bonny Jean Carter was sentenced on Tuesday to 33 months in prison and is ordered to pay about $986,500 in restitution. The money will be split between a bank where 61-year-old Carter once worked and the insurance company that covered the bank’s losses.

Carter was an account clerk at a SouthFirst Bank in Sylacauga and embezzled nearly $1 million between October 2002 and March 2013. U.S. District Court Judge Inge Johnson said she received letters from Carter’s supporters asking why the bank was unaware of the missing money.

Carter’s attorney, Joel Dillard, told AL.com his client is satisfied with the sentence and believes the court reached a fair conclusion on the case.
