PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A Philadelphia man has been sentenced to nine to 20 years in prison for attacking and robbing an 87-year-old neighbor and her son in July 2012.

Prosecutor Kristen Stretz said 43-year-old Jimmy Morrison was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to two counts of aggravated assault, burglary and a weapons charge. He said it was a robbery to get money for drugs.

Yvonne Gaines and her 62-year-old son James Brinkley, a Vietnam veteran, were stabbed with scissors and beaten but survived.

Morrison was a neighbor at the time and knocked on the victims’ door asking to use the bathroom.

The prosecutor said Gaines, a city committeewoman who is now 89 years old, is still suffering physically and emotionally.
