BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) - The Whatcom County sheriff’s office says a county jail inmate in Bellingham, Wash., has died after hanging herself in her cell.

The Bellingham Herald reports (https://is.gd/XBNe0s ) the sheriff says a deputy who was helping deliver medications found 36-year-old Shannon Rose Jefferson hanging by a bedsheet Monday afternoon in her third-floor cell.

The deputy and a nurse immediately started CPR and called for medics.

The inmate was taken to St. Joseph hospital, where she was placed on life support. The sheriff’s office says she died Monday evening.

County Medical Examiner Gary Goldfogel says an autopsy found injuries consistent with strangulation by a bedsheet.

Jefferson had been booked into jail Feb. 26 for failing to appear in court on a fourth-degree assault complaint and a probation violation.

The death is under investigation.
