MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont State Police say a phone scammer claiming to be a police lieutenant has solicited phony fines from least two Vermonters.

The Vermont State Police in Rutland say a man calling himself “Lieutenant Bryant from the Bennington County Sheriff’s Department” phoned two residents in the Poultney area and said they missed a jury duty appearance. Police say the caller then threatened the victims with either an arrest warrant or a fine of over $400 to be paid through a prepaid credit card.

Police say these calls are not legitimate. They are telling residents to withhold personal or payment information if they receive a similar call and to contact local police about the incident.
