BOISE, Idaho (AP) - The Boise Police Department says a 7-year-old sable-coated male German shepherd that was a member of the Boise Airport’s Explosive Detection K9 Team has died.

The department says Dasty 1 died Saturday at a local veterinary hospital after complications following emergency surgery required by a sudden illness.

Dasty joined the Boise Police Airport Unit in April 2009.

The department says that during Dasty’s 5-year career he responded to hundreds of calls and special assignments.

His tasks included making sure venues were safe for large crowds at events ranging from concerts, fun runs, football games and visits by dignitaries.

The department says he enjoyed meeting children and demonstrating his detection skills in dozens of school visits.
